Approximately 20 miles north of San Diego, Del Mar, CA graces the Pacific shore and claims two miles of beautiful beachfront. Originally conceived as a resort destination for the rich and famous, Del Mar, CA continues to enjoy its reputation as a luxury seaside enclave, yet it is a community that embraces the relaxed lifestyle that naturally comes with a beachfront location.
With Del Mar’s near-perfect Mediterranean climate, local parks and beaches provide the perfect setting for the Del Mar Village Association’s scheduled events. Del Mar, CA has a family and pet-friendly philosophy, so even Dog Beach is frequently the site of community sporting and fundraising events. On a hill overlooking the ocean at the center of town is the Del Mar Plaza, the scenic location of some of Del Mar’s best shopping and dining, and the perfect vantage point to watch the sunset. Directly opposite the Del Mar Plaza is the beautiful L’Auberge Resort, sometimes the location for an elegant ocean-view wedding, always a picturesque meeting place. With the irresistible charm of the village’s restaurants and boutiques, it is the perfect place to take a stroll.
The Del Mar Fairgrounds and Racetrack are an integral part of Del Mar’s celebrity history. In 1936 the fairgrounds opened to a crowd of 50,000, and each year in the same location the San Diego County Fair signals the start of summer. In 1937, backed by Paramount Studios, Bing Crosby and Pat O’Brien built the Del Mar Turf Club, with Bing Crosby playing an even larger role in its promotion, recruiting such stars as Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, Jimmy Durante and Betty Grable to make frequent guest appearances.
“Track” season follows the Fair, and thoroughbred racing continues to draw large crowds every summer. During the summer, the fairgrounds also plays host to an impressive list of musical entertainers. Directly east of Del Mar’s downtown, home sites dot the hills that serve as the backdrop to the village, and many offer breathtaking panoramic ocean views.
